How to Avoid Burnout from Your Job in 2020

What is worker burnout?

Burnout can be difficult to describe and even more difficult to identify but the most common definition of it would be a feeling or state of physical, mental or emotional exhaustion, often caused by external circumstances.

It can also be a state of disillusionment with life in general and with your surroundings, often leading to a general feeling of wanting to down-tools and leave your job or a certain situation.

How to identify worker burnout

There are lots of different ways you can recognize if you are feeling burnt out at work.

  • Here’s one of the biggest signs that you are beginning to feel burnt out: Everybody has difficult mornings sometimes but if you wake up every day and actively dread going in to work, then you may be suffering from burnout.
  • Feeling unfulfilled by work and finding yourself being very critical of your job whenever anybody asks questions about it are also huge red flags. This can lead to feelings of resentment and increase your stress levels, ultimately damaging your mental health and your work morale.
  • Feelings of being unappreciated or not good enough to do your job anymore is another tell-tale sign that you are beginning to suffer from some sort of burnout.

How to prevent burnout at work?

Be able to switch off

If you find yourself unable to stop checking your emails when you’re at home or constantly having your work phone at hand when you are spending time with friends and family, then it is time to reassess and set yourself healthier boundaries.

Setting yourself limits can go a long way in helping you avoid burnout from work. For example, not checking your emails after a specific time in the evening. If your boss or co-workers have a problem with the situation, then calmly explain to them that it is not beneficial for you to not have any time to yourself.

Practice relaxation techniques

Stress and anxiety can often be crippling and it can be hard to see a way out of a situation when you are beginning to get burnt out. That is why it is important that you practice different relaxation techniques to avoid burnout from work.

Practicing yoga or taking the time to meditate can be hugely beneficial and will help give you clarity and keep your mind focused. If you can stop, relax, and look at a situation clearly, then it often becomes clear that the situation is not as bad as you initially thought.

Find a job that brings you meaning

While it is not always possible to find a job you enjoy, your job should at least give you some sense of purpose or meaning. Working for a company that doesn’t treat you well or doing a job that you absolutely hate is going to have a detrimental effect on your mental health and it also means that you are not going to be as good at the job as you could be. To avoid burnout from work, find a job that doesn’t feel like work at all.

Talk to your manager

Many times, an employer won’t realize the effect that work is having on an individual’s mental health so therefore won’t bother making any changes to help you avoid burnout from work. Once these issues have been made apparent to an employer, they are probably going to want to help you out and see if you can come to a compromise to help you thrive at work, whatever that may be.

Most employers understand that if they want their workforce to be productive, then they need them to be healthy and looked after. Companies will often start seeing a decline in performance if their staff are not well looked after. If you feel as though you cannot talk to your manager, then maybe reaching out to your Human Resources department is a better alternative.

Of course, sometimes managers and employers also suffer burnout. If you are a manager or employer who is suffering from work-related burnout, then perhaps it is best to reach out to assistant managers or team leaders within your company and begin to delegate tasks more often. One of the biggest causes of burnout is people believing they can manage everything themselves. You should be aware of any staff who may be suffering and figure out ways of helping employees to avoid burnout.

Maintain control over your private life

When people begin to suffer from work-related burnout, they often allow this to interfere with all aspects of their life, and they begin to lose control of everything else in their life as well.

It is important if you’re feeling as though you are about to be burnt out that you speak to a good psychiatrist in the Midwest area and get help with separating your work life from your private life. This will be vital as allowing work-related stress to sneak into your private life can have many detrimental effects on relationships with friends and families.

Take a break

While this might sound like the most obvious solution to the issue, it is also the most important. Taking a step away from the work environment, even if it is only for a few days, can have a hugely positive effect on your mental health and well-being.

Even if you don’t go on vacation, just take a few days off, put your feet up, get a good book, turn your phone off, and relax. Getting peace of mind and clarity away from the work environment will help you get perspective and will make you feel much more relaxed in the long run.

Be sure to avoid post-holiday burnout though and make sure to arrange that your workload won’t be too stressful when you return.
